September 5th / Medi 5ed

Dear Parents,

Well, we've been back a week and already the summer (what there was of it) seems a distant memory.  The children have reported their enjoyment of the break and I hope everyone had a lovely time.  It's been nice to welcome everyone back, including our new pupils of whom you can read about below.  The school has been a busy place over the summer with new windows being put in as well as extensive work on the fire alarm system.

Annwyl Rieni,

Ar ol wythnos yn ol, mae'r haf yn teimlo yn bell yn ol yn barod.  Mae'r plant yn amlwg wedi mwynhau y gwyliau a gobeithio bod pawb wedi cael amser da.  Mae'n bleser croesawu pawb yn ol, yn cynnwys ein disgyblion newydd, a fedrwch ddarllen mwy amdanynt isod.  Mae wedi bod yn brysur iawn yma dros yr haf gyda ffenestri newydd yn cael eu rhoi i mewn, a'r system larwm wedi'w newid.

Welcome to Reception! - Last year's Nursery class became fully fledged members of Ysgol Gellifor this week as they moved into full-time education, joining the Reception class.  All thirteen of them look extremely smart and we're all looking forward to seeing them flourish here as the years go by.  A picture of the new Nursery class will be in next week's newsletter.

End of Year Report Evaluation Sheets - Thank you for returning these sheets as your feedback is appreciated.  Could any yet to be sent in be returned on Monday.

New Pupils! - Not only did we welcome new pupils in Nursery this week but were delighted to see pupils joining other classes.  Iestyn and Olivia have joined Reception, Tam has joined Year 1, Thomas and Mia Year 2, Jacob Year 4 and Molly Year 6.  All have settled in well and I'd like to welcome them and their families to the school community.

PE and Swimming Timetable - The PE timetable for this term is as follows:

Class B (Reception, Year 1 and 2) - Wednesday and Friday

Class C (Years 3 and 4) - Monday and Wednesday

Class D (Years 5 and 6) - Monday and Friday (Swimming)

Please note that swimming lessons have moved from a Monday to a Friday afternoon.

Breakfast Club - Breakfast Club re-started this week and we welcomed  a new staff member.  Catriona Andringa has joined Sara McCabe in helping to serve the children with a nutritious breakfast every morning.  The Breakfast Club is available to all pupils and is free.

A Few Rules Re-enforced - At the beginning of this new school year, I have re-enforced the following rules to the children: Fruit and only fruit is to be eaten during break times as we strive to promote healthy eating. They

are also encouraged to bring healthy foods in their lunchboxes to reflect the attempts made by

Mr Kellett to give the children a healthy lunch.  Now that the summer term is over, a tie and a shirt are to be worn each day along with black shoes and either black or grey socks (or white for the girls). The children are looking extremely smart in

their new uniforms. Could you also, please make sure that all items of clothing have your child's name clearly marked.

Class D Music - The year started off quite noisily as Years 5 and 6 worked in groups on an African call and response composition. Lots of fun was had and we recorded the end products ... it's remarkable how a microphone can inhibit even the most out-going musicians!

Payment of Monies - An increasing number of parents / children are placing money and correspondence in the black box

on days other than when Aunty Shelley is in. Please refrain from doing this and only send in

payment on a Monday or a Friday morning. If money, for some reason is requested on a Tuesday,

Wednesday or Thursday, then please can it be given directly to a staff member.  Dinner money should be paid in advance on the Monday morning.  Also, please note that the cost of lunch has gone up to £1.75 per day.

Music Tuition Bills - Please settle any outstanding bills from last year's music tuition before the new lessons begin from next week.

St Asaph Music Festival - On Monday 22nd September, Class 2 (Years 2 and 3) will visit the St Asaph Music Festival, to take part in a Wind in the Willows workshop - ‘The Musical Adventures of Toad'.  The cost of the activity is £3 per child.  Please send in your contribution on Monday.

Home School Agreement and Newsletter / Internet Preference forms - Attached you will find the forms usually sent out at the beginning of the school year.  Please fill them in and return them on Monday.

After School Clubs - This term's after school clubs will run as follows:

Monday - Dance (Juniors) and Doctor Who (all welcome)

Tuesday - Netball (Juniors)

Wednesday - Performing Arts (Juniors)

Thursday - Sports matches and wind band

Friday - Football (Juniors and Year 2)

Summer Reading - It is not too late for the children to finish this summer's reading challenge if they have not yet done so.  I am eager to see as many children as possible complete the challenge and be rewarded.

Year 3 and 4 Camp - Please refer to the attached kit list and also to the consent forms for this year's camp.  Could the forms be returned on Monday please.

Rugby - On Sunday morning, there will be an opportunity to take part in rugby activities at Ruthin Rugby Club from 10am.  Please refer to the attached flyer.

School Disruption Disruption - Next Friday, there will be some disruption in some classes, as we are having two new interactive whiteboards installed in Classes 1 and 2.

Class D History - So who thinks that we joined the European Union BEFORE we fought in World War Two? Class Four had an interesting afternoon, working on the Internet to sort out some of the main events of the Twentieth Century. Our studies this year, will centre around two contrasting periods during that century ... doesn't seem that long ago to some of us!
