  2008-2009

the year has started with yet more Community events - the monthly Whist drive continues and our Harvest  Festival really helped to cement our place n our local community. The Infant class made biscuits from Fair trade ingredients, the lower Juniors made baskets from recycled milk-bottles and the Upper Juniors made labels with a bi-lingual Harvest message. These small baskets of biscuits were delivered to 100 homes in the village to wish all our neighbours a happy Harvest time. Tjhe messages and cards of thanks reminded the pupils that even a small gesture is really appreciated by those who receive.

Christmas - we agan took part in the Community CArol Service and a group of mixed aged pupils sang two songs - one rather more traditional than the other! Readings were also given from Dylan Thomas' Child Christmas In Wales which Year 6 have studied in their Literacy lessons.

Community Church Service

One December Sunday evening was spent, joining with other members of the community for a lovely church service at Llangynhafal Church. A group of Juniors represented the school and sang 'O Seren Wen,' followed by one of the songs from the forthcoming Christmas Concert. Their tuneful singing was very much appreciated in the packed church. The children enjoyed munching on a mince pie or piece of cake afterwards.

Ysgol Gellifor Whist Drives

A great monthly event which takes place each fourth Thursday of the month, underpins our committment to being a Community School.  That event is the Whist Drive which is organised by Kate Dowell and supported by local Whist Drive afficianado Mr. Donald.

Many members of the Vale community join with us in the Community Hall and play some hands of whist.  During the interval tea and coffee is served and after all winners have been announced a huge raffle of impressive prizes is held, sometimes with over twenty prizes in total.

Each drive begins at 7.30pm so feel free to join us.

Another successful event was held on Thursday, thanks to the donations made by so many parents.

We were extremely grateful to receive many prizes and they were very well received on the night.

The total taken was a wonderful £373.50!

Community Treasure Hunt

The Treasure Hunt last Friday was very well attended and everyone enjoyed trying to solve the extremely cryptic clues set by Liz Ramsey. The darkness descended and the drizzle fell at the end but that didn’t dampen spirits. It merely gave people the incentive to go and enjoy the buffet! A total of £343.20 was raised and those funds will be extremely helpful in supplementing maintenance costs for the Community Centre.
