Heartstart
This term the Juniors have all taken part in this program which has been sposored by the British heart Foundation. According to their age, they have been taught how to deal with conscious and unconscious casulalties, choking, serious bleeding, suspected heart attack and Year 6 progressed onto CPR.
This was made a lot more fun by the use of the 12 manekins which BHF have donated. These lessons were extremely popular and hopefully gave them some skills which they will never have to use in an emergency .... if you see what I mean!
Going Green!
In early March 2008 pupils decided it was time to help the environment. An Eco-Committee was elected who would make decisions but use Eco-Warriors to do the hard work! The first meeting decided to undertake an audit of what was really happening in our school, as we all thought we knew what was required, but no-one had any real proof!
The Committee put an invitation in the Newsletter and received two letters during its second week; one from a parent and one from the Local Brownie Pack leader, both asked if they could be involved. This was great news.
After the audit has been discussed the Committee will form an Action Plan to tackle the areas most in need of attention - will it be litter, waste minimisation, water, energy, transport, school grounds or healthy living? We shall have to wait and see.
Year 6 learn to debate (January '08)
This half term we have combined our Personal and Social Education with our Literacy lessons, as we have been learning about expressing different points of view. One discussion which was particularly lively concerned the possible existence of ghosts! Everyone had firmly held opinions, but are learning to write a balanced discussion.
"Many people claim that ghost exist. On the other hand, others might not believe in ghosts but I would still argue that ghosts are real. Most people might not believe in ghosts because they have not seen one, whilst others might suggest that they only live in spooky, old buildings. However, I am confident that they are real and can be anywhere at anytime." Nathaniel
Another topic was making it compulsory to walk to school!
"In the first place I would claim that children should walk to school because if everyone walked between 8 o'clock and 9 o'clock in the morning, then there would be less pollution and kids would be healthier. On the other hand, many people believe that cars would be better because they are quicker and if children lived far away from school then they might not make it on time. Others might just suggest that they should wake up earlier so that they can walk into school on time!" Thomas
Fire and Rescue Presentation - Dec 07
We were joined on Thursday by Chris Appleton of the Fire Service who came to speak to the children about health and safety in the home and particularly about the dangers of fire and how to react in an emergency situation. He also spoke to the juniors about the dangers of electricity and overloaded plugs and the importance of regularly checking the fire alarm. More information can be found at www.staywise.co.uk
PC Chris
PC Chris visited and spoke to Class D - Years 5 and 6 under the title of 'It's Your Choice.' He told them about the various drugs and stimulants out there. He taught them which were addictive, dangerous and which were safe if used in a controlled way. He also spoke about the storage of drugs and also about the importance of being strong enough to say no when offered an illegal substance.
Bush Tucker Trials - Nov 07
Auntie Tracy held an event in the school hall, as part of our drive to become an ever more healthy school. It tied in with the 'I'm a Celebrity get me out of here!' programme from the television.
However, instead of eating bugs and various parts of jungle animals, all of the juniors were given the opportunity to taste a range of healthy foods. The twist was that they were to be blindfolded and had to guess which foods they were eating.
They were much more willing in this case to try and appreciate some of the more healthy foods on this occasion. Hopefully eating such foods will encourage them to sample them again from now on!

Visit to Dangerpoint
As part of their PSE studies, Years 5 and 6 visited Dangerpoint in Talacre and learnt about the importance of health and safety as well as other issues important to their personal and social development. Safety on the internet was another focus and was very timely bearing in ind the recent launch of the new website.

Anti Bullying Week
The week of the 19-23 November was National Anti-Bullying Week and we sought to recognise this important initiative by recognising the positive behaviour here at Ysgol Gellifor. Children were given a cardboard 'Billy My Mate' character, which they coloured/decorated to be displayed in the main corridor of the school to emphasise the friendship and kindness that should exist between children.
Pictured below you will see some of the Infant children, proudly showing off their 'Billy My Mate.'
PC Chris - Oct 07
PC Chris visited and spoke to Class B (Years Rec, 1 and 2) under the title of ‘An Apple a Day.’ He talked about good and bad things you find around the home. Tarian, the dragon warned them about touching, tablets and matches and pop bottles filled with coloured liquid. The children were very excited to find that Tarian could not breathe fire as he was not allowed to touch matches.
A Visit From Westminster - Sept 07
When we were told we had been awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark earlier this year, we thought it would be nice to invite Clwyd South MP, David Jones to come and present us with the award, but also to come and meet the children and speak about his life in Westminster as a Member of Parliament.
Before being presented with the plaque, the children took him on a tour of the school and to meet the children and staff in all of the classes.
The children had some knowledge of the Electoral process after their visit to the Welsh Assembly earlier this year and heard about politics from a different perspective on this occasion.
David Jones spoke at length to Years 5 and 6 and the children responded with a series of pertinent questions.
Don’t Touch Tell - Oct 07
The whole school was enthralled by a performance which highlighted the importance of not touching anything you find, but telling a responsible adult. . From the youngest to the oldest pupils, the laughter rang out and everyone was also given a leaflet to share with parents on this topic. The show featured Chicken Nugget and Charlie and a highly professional ventriloquist – even the staff were impressed by the lack of mouth movements – not something you see in the staff room very often!
School Council 07-08
Our school council was elected democratically by secret ballot in September. The council consists of 2 representatives from each Year group in the Juniors - one boy, one girl.
No child is allowed to sit on the council for more than one year in succession.
Accompanying them on the council is Bryn D. Jones (Headteacher) and Roger M. Jones(Chair of Governors.)
Here they are after hearing of their election:
