January 2009: a Great start ot the New Year - we have been awarded our Bronze Eco Award. We may even be able to apply for the Silver before Easter because of the work we have done. Thanks go to the Eco-Committee for their ideas and really working to raise the profile of eco-issues in our school. The next thing is to come up with an Eco-code. So we need to get our brains into gear for our next meeting.
Morrisons help: with the tokens collected - 1641 - we have ordered a variety of resources including a water butt. So hopefully the Infants will be able to use recycled water to help their garden grow this year!
Autumn Term: Our first experiment! The committee decided to try to recycle our waste paper in-house, by making shredded paper brickettes to sell at the Christmas Fair. The idea is that they can be burnt on a fire instead of coal, but first we had to find out IF they would burn and over how long. Pictured below is the Eco-COmmittee burning the proto-type brickette .... in a smokey bin full of leaves it lasted over 2 hours! A success.

We have recently registered as part of the Eco-School scheme which will ultimately see the school being accredited the status of 'Eco-School'.
A number of activities and initiatives are up and running which began with the election of an eco-committee.
These pages will give you a flavour of the activities going on as we try to establish Ysgol Gellifor as an environmentally friendly, sustainable school.
The second eco-warriors have now been elected (October 2008) and have undertaken their first assignment! They are trying to find ways of recycling all the paper we use in the school "This is awful, I can't believe how much we use!" said Tom Owen. So we have made a paper brick and on Thursday we set fire to it, to see how long it would urn. We were delighted that it took over 2 hours (albeit with a bin full of leaves) to turn to ash, and so the children are now confident that they could make these and sell them to people who want to save money on buying coal and logs - as well as saving these non-sustainable fuel sources. Lets watch this space!
