Summer League Parish Tournament PDF Print E-mail
Written by Susan Roberts
The school team in its present incarnation made its last appearance in this tournament, representing the parish of Llangynhafal and went out in style, winning the runner's up spot after some fantastic performances, losing out to an exceptional Llannefydd side.  After beating Llandyrnog, Nantglyn and Henllan, a 2-0 semi final win against Caerwys saw the boys through to the final, only to be thwarted in the final by two goals to nil.  A particular highlight from the afternoon, was Joe Shone earning a yellow card for taking off his shirt after he scored the winning goal past Chris Evans against Llandyrnog.  This year's squad have played superbly and it's a shame the team will no longer play together.  I'm sure those who step into the shoes of those moving on, will also excel.

Football v. Pen Barras (A) - Dec 13th

The boys finished the year off in style, with a fantastic victory against Pen Barras by two goals to nil.  A tight first half saw chances fall to both sides, but no goals came until early in the second half, when super sub Chris Evans cooly slotted home after good work by Oliver down the right.  Tom Weyman then made the game safe as he poked home a cross by Chris giving the lads their most impressive victory of the season so far.

Football v. Llanfair (A) - Nov 29th

Another enjoyable and successful football fixture took place last night with the footballers winning 3-1 with goals from Tom, Joe and Jack. They finished the game covered in mud, but seem to be playing very well on the heavy pitches we’re playing on of late.

Football v. Bro Famau (A) - Nov 22nd

The first team got back to winning ways last night in the mud bath that was the Bro Famau pitch last night.  They triumphed 2-0, with a goal in each half from Tom Weyman.  The second team lost 1-0, but the children selected gave a real battling account of themselves.

Football v. Bryn Tabor (A) - Nov 15th

After their promising start to the football season, both teams were brought back down to earth with two defeats in the gloom of Coedpoeth last night. The first team certainly had an off day, losing 3-0 and the second team defeated 2-0. Next week, the first team will play Pentrecelyn at home on Tuesday night and on Thursday, two teams will travel to Llanferres to play Ysgol Bro Famau away.

A squad of girls took part in this tournament and despite their lack of experience gave it a real go.  They battled out draws with Ysgol y Llys and Cefn Meriadog, but were beaten by Dewi Sant, Pen Barras and Bro Elwern.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

Football v. Rhewl (A)

The first team faced Rhewl on the final afternoon before the holiday and continued their good form with a deserved 3-1 victory. Jack Salmon gave us the lead before Rhewl equalised, but second half goals from super sub Chris Evans gave us victory.

Urdd Football

An enjoyable morning was spent at Denbigh High School, where the school fielded two teams in the football tournament.Thesecond team enjoyed the experience, but their results did not reflect their enthusiasm.  The first team was unlucky, missing out by one point from qualifying for the semi finals after victories against Pen Barras, Bro Fammau and Cefn Meiriadog and drawing against Twm o'r Nant. The defeat against Ysgol Llywelyn, unfortunately proved costly.

Football v. Ysgol Borthyn (A)

The footballers had a real battle against Ysgol Borthyn, with two evenly matched sides scrapping it out. Borthyn took an early lead from a rebound after Dominic had saved well. Tom Weyman then saw his penalty brilliantly saved by the keeper as we pushed for an equaliser. The goal soon came as Tom skilfully poked the ball home after a good passing move and Gellifor were level. The second half was a bit of stalemate, with both defences on top and Dominic having a superb game in goal (despite an unwillingness to use his hands!) The final whistle blew and a draw was a fair result. The netballers did superbly, as they comfortably won their match 11-2 with Wednesday and Molly being on fine form in the shooting area.

Football v. Llanbedr (A)

The boys had their first football fixture on October 11th and in total we had 22 players given the opportunity. The first team wore their new red and black strip and it brought them luck as they ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Luke Willsdon, Tom Weyman and Jack Salmon. It was a very impressive performance and augurs well for this season! The new kit has been sponsored by David Weyman Tree Maintenance and we are extremely grateful to him for this marvellous gesture. The second team was split in two, with one set of lads playing the first half and the other for the second half. It was a very competitive but they were unluckily beaten 2-0. Next week the first team only will play a fixture against Ysgol Borthyn.
