Autumn Term - Babies and Play
The children had a visitor to the school, Aunty Jill's grandaughter Poppy. The children had prepared questions and read them out with confidence. They were very interested in what Poppy could do and how she would develop.
They found out what Poppy likes to play with and brought in their toys from when they were babies.
The children learnt about the types of toys used in Victorian times and really enjoyed playing with the toys.
We sorted old toys and worked out they were not as colourful or made of the same materials as our toys today.
Working on practical activities learning about shape, number and sounds.
We designed a toy mobile for a baby and used the laminator and the photo copier to help us.
The Gardening Project
Our Nursery visit
The weather was very kind when we went to see how people plant on a massive scale. One group of children were armed with clipboards with questions at the ready to find out what the nursery owners do every day. The second group were given the task to collect as many artefacts of our visit as they could find, (obviously checking with the owners they could take them).
The children were absolutely in awe of the amount of plants they saw.
We examined the way they water the plants using a sprinkler system. I think the children were hoping it could be switched on. They found out that plants also need food and that the owners know exactly which plant needs what and when. Amazing when you consider how many plants were there.
Then we searched for flowers to plant in our tyres in the Early Years outdoor classroom. We decided that not only did we want pretty ones (very much the girls decision) but we wanted them to smell nice too. So we set about smelling those we had chosen and made sure with the specialists that they would last a long time.
Wednesday 22nd April
The children talked about all of the hazards in the field. We went on a hunt to find nettles so that we knew not to touch them!
We got our bearings by completing a treasure hunt. The children had to collect 8 pieces of treasure and all of the groups completed the task really quickly. Mrs Weyman was amazed at how well they worked as a team. This group was very good at finding all of the answers to the clues in the treasure hunt.
We talked about what we would like to do in our garden and Tam suggested planting vegetables and fruit. Amy had an idea to have a tea party when they have grown and we talked about what seeds we could plant. After that we sorted the seeds into those we could plant and those that we could not, (too early or too late).
Mr Weyman helped us with the major digging we needed to do. He used a special machine called a rotavator and we watched him dig up our garden. We helped by clearing all of the stones after he had finished.
The children went on a scavenger hunt for as many different things they could fit in their matchbox. All of them worked hard and found some very interesting things including petals and different wild flowers.
The children ended the day by sketching pictures of the tractor and rotavator. We all went home very tired but very excited about our new project.
Tuesday 28th April
Now began the hard work. Once again we travelled to our garden and began measuring out our plot. In two's we measured out a metre square and started planting our potted plants, which were strawberries and cabbage.
Mrs Hazel Roberts demonstrated how to plant beans and this group of children had lots of questions to ask. Although not all were about planting. Hazel managed to get all the children's names right and planted lots of beans to get them thinking about how to plant in their own plot.
All of the children must have listened well as they successfully planted all of their pots.
Then it rained, so time for milk and fruit - Yum Yum!
Then it was time to go back to work planting the seeds. We talked about how seeds take longer to grow and we planted radish, cabbage, lettuce, spring onions and beetroot. We dug trenches and everyone planted a row of radish and lettuce in their patch.
Plenty of time for a chat!
Time to make some signs for the garden. We included who made the garden and what was in each patch. We had some lovely signs, some had pictures and others had writing. They were great!
Mr Weyman fenced it because of the rabbits. The children were also very worried about the worms but the children were assured that worms are very good and useful creatures. Here is a picture of the completed garden with the fence. Don't worry James we will still be able to get in as Mr Weyman has put a gate on it!
Then it was back to school after a very tiring day.
The children have not collapsed with tiredness in this picture we are looking at the clouds to see dragons and crocodiles. Well thats what they said they saw! We also listened for Spring sounds, we heard a tractor, a woodpecker, birds and the wind in our ears. What an exhausting but very wonderful day!
Thursday May 7th
Time to go back to the garden to water and weed. We also put our signs up, which we had prepared earlier. The signs were so each person knew where their piece of garden was and what was planted there. We are already seeing some shoots coming up and we were all very excited by this.
Class Topic - Space
The children in Class one have been very busy learning through the topic of Space.
They made number rockets. Counted cubes to match each number.
They investigated, looked in books and explored the internet to look at the Nasa website. They also made rockets in space pictures on the interactive whiteboard.
The first big task was to make a role play area and after long discussions they decided on what the rocket would look like.
The spacestation took a lot of planning and eventually a vote enabled them to create a rocket which was red and silver, alot of sticking and painting took place. They wanted a telephone and computer and made a log of the astronauts going into space.
Fantastic Work Children!
Storywriting in Class 1
The children wrote some fantastic stories this week. They have been doing alot of work on the story, ' The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. Mrs Weyman had stories about three little aliens and the tar monster amongst others. Here is one she would like to share with you. The spellings have not been altered in any way, however, some speech marks have been added to aid reading.
Once upon a time there were two stupid ants who lived beside the fattest and deepest pond that you have ever seen. Let's get on with the story now. The ants wanted to cross the pond to get some bugs they knew that under the bridge to cross the pond was a big bad fish. So they made a plan, shall I tell you the plan. You know that theres a bad fish under the bridge. The furst ant went tip tap tip tap over the bridge 'who dares to go tip tap over my bridge' said the fish. 'It's me' lady ant. 'I don't want you,' said the fish. 'I want a bigger one.' So she went over. Next big ant went tip tap tip tap 'ooooo I would like you' said the fish. 'Oh no you don't', and with a bang he got the fish in the water and went over to get the bugs.
The End

Fantastic!
Class 1 Science visit
The children in Class 1, as part of their Science topic, visited a building site to see what sort of materials are used in the building of a house. The children were able to find a variety of materials and talked about whether they are man-made or natural. They also had a go at building their own wall in a variety of ways. Pictured is Connor looking like a man with a mission as he holds onto his wheelbarrow. A gallery of the visit can be seen by clicking here.
PC Chris
The infants were very excited to see P.C. Chris, as well as Aunty Sue. His visit was about the right or wrong things to do around the school. It addressed issues such as bullying, graffiti and smoking. All of the children were very keen to say that these were all wrong things to do, which pleased P.C Chris greatly. Well Done Class B.
Gym Tots
The Nursery children have been extremely lucky to have Tamsin Lloyd Jones leading some gym sessions for them to enjoy. You can enjoy a gallery of pictures of their sessions by clicking here.
