Spring 2009
Pupils in Years 1 and 2 having been working with Mr Roberts to improve their rhythm and their skills when accompanying other musicians. After clapping out rhythms, they have been allowed to progress onto 'proper' instruments and have achieved a pleasing standard of group and whole class work. Well done!
Year 5 and 6 are looking at Stravinky's Petroushka this term. The first extract is less than three minutes long but represents the part of the story when the Showman is trying to entice people into the Puppet Theatre from the cold Fayre being held by the frozen river close to St Pertersburg.
" The low notes sound like it is cloudy. The short tunes (decending) [her brackets no mine!] is when there are people coming but going away again. The solo flute tune is when he wants and wants and wants people to come." Robyn
" The quietness of the first section shows how few people are there and the silences represent what the weather is like. In the second section the solo flute is very good and shows there is one showman trying to get you to his show." Peter
"There aren't many kids at the Fayre and i could tell he wanted to show us that it is a dull place. The music makes me think this because of the pauses in it and the low notes, but there's high pitch sound too that shows there might be drops of rain. In the second part the showman is wearing bright colours and dancing lightfooted, because there are noises like a butterfly in the sky." Ellie
"The composer creates a great picture of the scene.it is quiet and ghostly and then the Showman comes along and plays a tune that is hypnotic and persuasive." Sam
"I think that the music gets happier when the flute plays, but it is a solo flute so he is performing to empty seats." Eleri
(Second section) "The repeats are persuasive and the long notes are magical". Sophie
Autumn 2008 - class music involved revision of the elements with Years 5 and 6 and then of course all the appraising and performing skills associated with our Christmas Show - the Wizard of Odz. The tunes were fine, but some of the lyrics were a bit dodgy when Mrs Dowell had re-written them to fit our story! Mrs Jones gathered together an ensemble - Sam (Year 6),Joe, Georgia, Niamh and Scott (all in Year 4) plus Mr Temple and Hamish, Chris and Vicki Sennett - who all worked extremely hard to produce a musical accompaniment for the show, which was once again a credit to the school.
Brass Performance
Our brass players were given the chance on the last day of term to play a carol to the pupils in our sinalong service.
Guitar Showcase
The children were treated to a guitar showcase this week from the children receiving lessons from Mr. Luke. We heard some Avril Lavigne, Jingle Bells and a raucous blast of AC/DC. The children showed both great enthusiasm and promise. The ones having just begun their instruction showed real hope for the future! Thanks go to Luke for working so hard with the children. Christmas 2008: Fron Yw
As has become the custom over the last few years, a group of children visited Fron Yw Nursing Home on Wednesday and performed a selection of carols and songs from our Christmas shows. Mrs Dowell was extremely proud of the way the children behaved and chatted away to the elderly folk: staff said it had really brightened their Christmas Party. Residents were supping a seasonal tipple and the children were treated to juice and cakes, so a good time was had by all!
A Super Market Performance
Windband’s musical aptitude was there to be heard by all who shopped at Tesco on Wednesday 12th. They played a series of carols, while a throng of other pupils and parents stood collecting money towards the minibus. Many positive comments were made about the Windband and a total of £167 was collected. Many thanks go to those pupils and parents and staff for giving of their own time. I’d also like to thank Eryl Jones who helped with the transportation of the model mini bus.

Windband and Recorder Group - Xmas Fayre
The Windband made their first public performance of the school year for the Meithrin / PTA Christmas Fayre.
They have been practising hard recently and played a series of carols to entertain those who attended.
The recorder group also joined in with some further performances.
Doctor Who Creative Piece
The members of the Doctor Who club have been creatively producing a piece of music under the title of 'Space'.
